Stein Misses the Point Concerning Burlesque

Re “Why Fear Drives Us to Pogo-Stick Stripping,” Opinion, March 27: Joel Stein’s review of Lucha Va Voom is tragic. By comparing burlesque to “American Idol,” he proves his lack of artistic awareness and education. In the America of dumbed-down, freeze-dried, factory-fresh entertainment available to the masses today, it is apparent that Stein missed the entire point of burlesque. If he wanted strip club entertainment, then he should have ventured into one of those dark and seedy places he was longing for. Next time you have someone cover the burlesque scene, maybe you could have them look up the word “burlesque” in the dictionary first.

Stein is mistaken if he thinks burlesque dancers are frustrated strippers who are afraid of “stripping at a genuinely sleazy club and exposing your sexuality.” Truth is, a number of burlesque dancers work in such clubs. However, burlesque is where their hearts are, and it doesn’t necessarily pay the bills. Camp appreciation may just be a cover for many, but please remember that camp is in the eye of the beholder.
