Massachusetts Turnpike officials on Wednesday suspended all work directly above the Big Dig tunnels by the contractor responsible for a construction gaffe that sent dirt and gravel raining down on traffic.

Turnpike Chairman Matthew Amorello called the gravel glitch “simply unacceptable” and said Modern Continental Co. will be barred from doing some kinds of work until officials can review the company’s protocols to ensure future construction is carried out safely.

The dirt and gravel fell Tuesday from an air shaft in one of the tunnels carrying Interstate 93 beneath downtown Boston, causing minor damage to four vehicles and leading to a brief shutdown of two lanes.
