A Community Works to Limit Student Drinking

Share

I understand some of the errors in the March 29 article on Cal State Chico have been corrected, but I wanted your readers to know about how our community is responding to the problem of student drinking.

Members of our University Advisory Board -- which includes community leaders -- have been part of a Community Youth and Alcohol Committee. Our cooperative efforts have turned Halloween back into a normal celebration rather than a drunken downtown party for thousands of young people.

We also have worked with our local restaurant and bar establishments to change St. Patrick’s Day into a more normal celebration by modifying their operating hours. The university has set spring break to coincide with that week so fewer students are here to participate. We are working with the university on more comprehensive programs to develop further positive solutions to these problems. We are committed to continue this cooperative effort until we see a history of positive change.
