22 Sentenced to Death in Lawmaker’s Murder
A Bangladeshi court sentenced 22 people to death and six to life in prison for murdering an opposition lawmaker nearly a year ago.
Ahsanullah Master, a lawmaker from the Awami League, the main opposition party, was slain May 7 by gunmen at a rally in Tongi, an industrial town near Dhaka, the capital.
Prosecutors said about 20 gunmen attacked the rally. Only 12 of those convicted were in custody, while the remaining 16 were tried in absentia.
Some of the defendants were supporters of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
