From Times Staff and Wire Reports

At least seven people died in clashes between rival political groups in Togo’s capital this weekend, a rights group and party officials said, as fear gripped an edgy city ahead of next Sunday’s presidential vote.

A rights group close to the ruling party said six supporters of that group had been killed and about 100 injured in street fighting in a northern suburb of Lome on Saturday. An opposition leader said one of its members had been killed and 55 hurt.

Each side blames the other for provoking the first serious clashes since the vote was called after President Gnassingbe Eyadema died in February.
