Santa Fe lands Ades’ ‘Tempest’
To help celebrate its 50th season next year, Santa Fe Opera has landed the American premiere of British composer Thomas Ades’ first full-length opera, “The Tempest.”
With a libretto by playwright Meredith Oakes based loosely on Shakespeare’s play, the work debuted at Covent Garden in London in February 2004 and won that year’s Laurence Olivier Award as outstanding opera production. It will be the last of five new productions that make up the New Mexico opera company’s 2006 summer season.
The opera will be newly staged by Jonathan Kent and will include three members of the original cast, including L.A. native Cyndia Sieden as Ariel. Alan Gilbert will be the conductor.
The season will also feature a gala concert hosted by mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. The other new productions will include “Carmen,” with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter making her company debut in the title role.
