Setting New ‘Standards

Share

High Standards keeps winning but can’t keep a rider.

A 3-year-old gelded son of High Brite owned by breeder John Harris and trained by Marty Jones, High Standards is four for four, having scored all of his victories under different jockeys.

David Flores was aboard for the Cal-bred’s maiden victory, then Jason Lumpkins rode him to victory at Bay Meadows, Edgar Prado had the honors in the Baldwin at Santa Anita, then Mike Smith had the call when High Standards won the San Pedro on March 26.

Tonight, Patrick Valenzuela will ride in the chestnut’s Hollywood Park debut, the $75,000 Harry Henson Stakes, the main event on the opening-night card of the 64-day spring summer season in Inglewood.

The 5 1/2 -furlong Henson, named in honor of the late track announcer, will be the first start on turf for High Standards, who has won his races by a combined 8 3/4 lengths.

Race of the day: Fantastic Spain, who has won two of three starts on the Hollywood Park turf course, returns to his favorite playground in tonight’s fifth. The 5-year-old Fantastic Fellow horse, trained by Kristin Mulhall for a partnership, will be ridden by Alex Solis, who has been aboard for both of his victories, in the $55,000 optional claimer at 1 1/4 miles.

One for the road: Marshon can fire in his first start since Dec. 29 for trainer Ronny Werner in today’s seventh at Keeneland. The 4-year-old Elusive Quality colt broke his maiden in his debut last fall at Churchill Downs, so he is proven fresh.

Eddie Martin Jr. will ride Marshon in the $54,000 allowance at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Gateway Arch and Going On Again in the third, My Dear Jazz, Court Shenanigans and Sabalucious in the fourth and Fantastic Spain in the fifth.

Winners (Final totals for Santa Anita): Previous day/meet total: 2/219. Money: Previous day/meet total: $13/$1,193.80. Total money bet: $1,460.
