Two shooting deaths over the weekend have brought the number of homicides in the city this year to 46 -- seven more than all of last year -- Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.

On Friday night, a 26-year-old man was shot with an assault rifle from a passing SUV. Tanzania Bernard of Compton died of his wounds; two bystanders were injured. The assailant’s vehicle, a stolen 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, was found burning a mile away, apparently torched intentionally.

Early Sunday, assailants in an SUV fired several shots from a handgun at a man sitting in a parked car on West Cedar Street. The victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has not been identified.
