From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Up to 40,000 gallons of sewage streamed eight miles from San Luis Obispo’s treatment plant to Avila Beach, forcing swimmers out of the polluted ocean waters.

A computer glitch at the Los Osos Valley Road plant was blamed for the spill Tuesday morning, which went unreported for hours.

Health officials closed off water access in Avila Beach, although people were allowed on the sand.
