A 19-year-old Lynwood man was shot to death early Sunday as he stood with a group of friends outside a house in Compton, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said. The shooting was believed to be gang-related.

Daniel Duren was outside a house in the 1000 block of South Grandee Avenue when a man walked up and opened fire with a handgun, sheriff’s Sgt. Don Manumaleuna said. Duren was hit in the upper torso and pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

The gunman escaped. Witnesses did not identify him, Manumaleuna said.

The crime was the 44th homicide of the year in Compton. The city’s homicide rate is on track to lead the nation this year.
