The Napa Valley Vintners trade group said the California Supreme Court had denied an appeal against a lower court decision in the group’s long-standing legal battle with Bronco Wine Co.

The California Court of Appeal ruled in May that any wine bottle with the word “Napa” on the label must be made mostly from local grapes as required by state law.

Bronco Wine Co., a San Joaquin Valley maker of popular, inexpensive wines, has challenged the law because the company uses the Napa name for some of its wines made with grapes grown outside the Napa Valley. Under California law, 85% of a wine bearing a Napa Valley label must be made of grapes from Napa.

Napa Valley Vintners, which has 270 winemaker members, said it expected Bronco to file a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court in the next 90 days.
