Awestruck
On any given day, cartoonists have a choice: They can take potshots at a target of opportunity such as televangelist Pat Robertson, who put himself in the cross-hairs when he advocated the assassination of Venezuela’s leader, or they can pen a picture truly worth the proverbial 1,000 words. It could take 1,000 excuses from your Hummer-driving neighbor to straighten out Tom Toles’ gas-line twist, and 1,000 White House press briefings to equal the disquieting force of Pat Oliphant’s commander-in-chief addressing the troops. And would all the angry words of thousands of years of disputes over territory, resources, power, race and religion match the fundamental truths of Bob Englehart’s intelligent design?
This is one of those weeks when I stand in awe of my peers. Come to think of it, I feel more than a little threatened by them -- I wonder if Robertson can arrange for someone to take them out?
