Republicans continue their hypocrisy

Re “Military Recruiting Bans Seem Doomed,” Dec. 7

The Republican-sponsored Solomon Amendment that was argued to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, and that withholds from universities federal grants for education, science and the like if the schools do not allow military recruiting, is another example of Republican hypocrisy.

For decades, the Republicans warned about federal government control of local governments, schools and people by withholding federal money. Now that the Republicans are in power, the threat of loss of government funding if others do not follow the federal government guidelines is suddenly just fine.

Add that to the list of other expansive powers Republicans have shifted position on: federal intrusion into the most personal of decisions such as marriage and ending one’s life in the face of painful death; federal laws overturning citizen-passed referendums (such as the marijuana initiative in California and death with dignity in Oregon); and the biggest deficit this country has ever seen. I guess hypocrisy is OK as long as you’ve got all three branches of the government in your control.
