Bush, Young Receive Multiple Awards

USC tailback Reggie Bush continued to haul in postseason honors Thursday when he was announced as the winner of the Walter Camp player-of-the-year award and the Doak Walker award, presented annually to the nation’s top running back.

Vince Young of Texas, however, won the Maxwell Award, which is another player-of-the-year honor, and also won the Davey O’Brien Award as the top quarterback.

Bush was announced as the Doak Walker winner in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., during a nationally televised college football awards show where Young and other players also were honored.

Bush is the first Trojan to win the Doak Walker award, which has been presented since 1990, and he is regarded by many as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, which will be presented Saturday in New York.

Bush is the fifth USC player to win the Walter Camp award, which was announced earlier Thursday -- the others were running backs O.J. Simpson (1967 and 1968), Charles White (1979) and Marcus Allen (1981) and quarterback Matt Leinart (2004). Coaches and sports information directors vote on the award.

Split end Dwayne Jarrett, who was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award (top wide receiver), and Leinart also were voted onto the Walter Camp All-America team. Jarrett and offensive Taitusi Lutui were scheduled to travel to Florida, but made last-minute decisions to remain in Los Angeles to complete academic work during finals week, according to a USC official.
