Glaciers’ Faster Pace May Be Due to Warming

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Climate warming is the likely culprit behind the fast retreat of two of Greenland’s largest glaciers, scientists told a meeting of the American Geophysical Union on Thursday.

One of the glaciers, Kangerdlugssuaq, is moving at about nine miles a year compared with three miles a year in 2001.

The other glacier, Helheim, is speeding at about seven miles a year -- up from four miles a year during the same period.

Sea levels have risen globally 4 to 8 inches over the last century because of melting glaciers and polar ice.

Melting of Greenland ice is estimated to be responsible for about 7% of the increase.
