Suspected Car Burglar Shot, Killed by Police in Gardena
Gardena police shot and killed a suspected car burglar who charged at them while holding a screwdriver early Saturday morning, sheriff’s deputies said.
Two officers saw the man standing near a car at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of West Manhattan Beach Boulevard about 4:15 a.m. and ordered him to surrender, sheriff’s deputies said.
The suspect, who was not identified, ignored the officers’ instructions and charged at them with the screwdriver, said Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Gage.
The two officers both shot the man, who was pronounced dead at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, authorities said.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the shooting, as they do all shootings by Gardena police officers.
Both officers were placed off duty and will see a department psychologist before returning to work, Gage said.
Gardena police and sheriff’s officials would not disclose how many shots were fired or how many times the man was shot.
