Connecticut Ends Syracuse Streak

Charlie Villanueva had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 19-ranked Connecticut defeated No. 8 Syracuse, 74-66, Monday night, ending the Orange’s 16-game home winning streak.

Villanueva outscored Syracuse, 7-5, in the last eight minutes as the Huskies, 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the Big East Conference, won for the fourth time in five games.

Hakim Warrick had 16 points for the foul-plagued Orange (21-3, 8-2), who had won all 14 home games this season. The last time Syracuse lost in the Carrier Dome had been Feb. 16, 2004, to Notre Dame.

The game was a matchup of the last two national champions, and the defending champions prevailed. It also matched two of the winningest coaches in the sport’s history. Connecticut’s Jim Calhoun has 695 victories, two behind Jim Boeheim.

No. 10 Oklahoma State 79, No. 16 Oklahoma 67 -- JamesOn Curry and Joey Graham each scored 22 points to give the Cowboys their 27th consecutive victory at home.

Ivan McFarlin had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and John Lucas III scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half for the Cowboys (18-4, 7-2 Big 12 Conference).

Kevin Bookout had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Sooners (17-4, 7-3).

No. 15 Utah 57, Nevada Las Vegas 53 -- Bryant Markson scored 19 points at Las Vegas and the Utes extended their winning streak to 15 games.

The Utes (20-3, 8-0 Mountain West Conference) led by one point with less than a minute to play but closed by making four of six free throws.

The Rebels (9-11, 2-6) mounted a spirited rally late in the second half, going on an 11-2 run that was capped by Louis Amundson’s dunk to cut the deficit to 52-48 with 4:07 to go.

No. 22 Villanova 67, St. Joseph’s 52 -- Jason Fraser had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and the Wildcats (14-5) withstood a second-half rally by the Hawks (11-9) at Philadelphia.

SOUTHLAND

Cal State Fullerton 79, UC Davis 55 -- Bobby Brown had 23 points and five assists, and the Titans (12-7) outscored the Aggies, 54-27, in the second half at Davis (8-14).
