Louisiana Secretary of State Fox McKeithen was paralyzed Thursday after a fall at his home, a statement from his office said.

“The bones in Secretary McKeithen’s neck have shifted and he is currently paralyzed. The doctors have told the family that, at this time, they do not know if the paralysis is temporary or permanent,” the statement said.

Details of the accident were not released.

His spokeswoman, Jennifer Marusak, said the 58-year-old McKeithen “wasn’t feeling well” before the fall and had canceled a meeting.

She said that after the fall he was conscious and able to talk.

McKeithen, son of former Gov. John McKeithen, was elected to his first term as secretary of state in 1987.

“I have spoken with members of his family, who have asked for our prayers,” Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco said in a statement after she and her husband learned of the fall.

“Raymond and I join all those citizens of Louisiana who are praying for Fox and his family.”
