Northridge Gets Past Fairfield

Ian Boylan made the key basket to give Cal State Northridge a 68-65 victory over Fairfield on Saturday at Bridgeport, Conn.

Boylan, who previously made only one basket, made a 15-foot jump shot with 24 seconds to play to give the Matadors (15-10) a 66-65 lead.

Fairfield (12-13) committed a turnover on its next possession and Joseph Frazier made two free throws. Frazier led the Matadors with 18 points. Boylan finished with 11.

A last-second three-point shot by Fairfield’s Michael Bell hit the front rim.

The Stags led, 48-38 with 13:28 to play after Bell made a three-point basket. But the Matadors went on a 20-5 run to take a 58-53 lead.

Fairfield re-claimed the lead, 65-64, when Kudjo Sogadzi made two free throws, but Boylan then made the game-winner.

No. 19 Pacific 73, Texas El Paso 66 -- David Doubley made a key three-point basket with 1:18 left at Stockton to help the Tigers increase their winning streak to 18 games. Omar Thomas had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Miners (20-7), who lost for the fourth time in seven games after a 17-3 start.

Nevada 74, Vermont 64 -- The Wolf Pack shut down the Catamounts’ sharpshooters in the second half of the game matching the leaders of the Western Athletic and America East conferences at Reno and registered the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in school history.

Nick Fazekas had 31 points and 14 rebounds for Nevada (20-5), which won its sixth in a row and eighth of its last nine. T.J. Sorrentine scored 24 points, but was held to nine in the second half for Vermont (19-5). Taylor Coppenrath, who entered the game ranked third in the nation averaging 24.1 points per game, finished with 18.

Creighton 100, Chattanooga 68 -- Nate Funk and Kellen Miliner combined for 11 of the Blue Jays’ school-record 20 three-point baskets, leading them past the Mocs (16-9) at Omaha.

Creighton (17-10) surpassed its previous record of 16 three-pointers in an 84-79 loss to Evansville in January 1999.

Illinois State 79, Wisconsin Green Bay 69 -- The Redbirds (17-9) made seven of eight free throws in the final 1:06 to clinch the victory at Green Bay, Wis.

Illinois State led, 46-29, after a three-point basket by Gregg Alexander with 16 minutes left. The Phoenix (17-8) cut the deficit to five points twice in the last seven minutes.

But the Phoenix could get no closer, and Alexander made another three-pointer with 5 1/2 minutes left to make the score 60-51.

Miami (Ohio) 65, Wichita State 58 -- The RedHawks (17-6) outscored the Shockers, 9-3, over the final 1:27 at Oxford, Ohio, after they cut a 10-point deficit down to one.

Wichita State (18-6) never led and missed a chance to go ahead when Kyle Wilson missed a three-point shot with 2:01 remaining.

Wisconsin Milwaukee 87, Hawaii 81 -- The Panthers (21-5) used an early run in the second half to build a 13-point lead and then withstood a furious comeback by the Warriors (14-8) midway through the half at Honolulu.

Hawaii used a 12-3 run that made the score 69-66 with 6:39 left, but Panthers scored the next five points. The Warriors managed only four more baskets the rest of the game.

Southern Illinois 65, Kent State 54 -- Jamaal Tatum was almost perfect for the Salukis (22-6) at Kent, Ohio. He made seven of eight shots from the field, including four of five three-point baskets, and four of five free throws to help beat the Golden Flashes (16-10).
