Track for Buena Vista Handicap to Pivot on Weather

Share

With rain expected to continue through Tuesday, it seems likely that the $150,000 Buena Vista Handicap, scheduled to be run for the 18th time today, will be moved to the main track.

A Grade II at one mile on the turf, the Buena Vista attracted 13 fillies and mares, but which ones compete depends on whether the race is on dirt or grass.

On the turf, Intercontinental would be favored. The winner of the Matriarch, a Grade I, on Nov. 28 at Hollywood Park in her most recent appearance, the 5-year-old Danehill mare is the 2-1 favorite on Jeff Tufts’ morning line.

Owned and bred by Juddmonte Farms and trained by Bobby Frankel, Intercontinental has won eight of 15 in her career, including four of six since arriving in this country. Jerry Bailey has been named the rider.

The contenders on dirt would include Resplendency, who won the Monrovia Handicap, a race switched from turf to the main track earlier in the meet, Elusive Diva and Solar Echo.

Trained by Mark Glatt for a partnership, Elusive Diva is fresh off a win in her turf debut in the Wishing Well Handicap on Jan. 30 but has won three of eight on dirt. One of her wins came at the Buena Vista distance last March 10.

Race of the day: Don Six, who comes off victories in the Gravesend and Paumonok Handicaps at Aqueduct, will make his first start at Laurel in today’s $200,000 General George Handicap, a Grade II at seven furlongs. Mike Luzzi will ride the 5-year-old Wild Escapade horse for owner Patricia Generazio and trainer Scott Lake against Taste Of Paradise, who will be ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr., Gators N Bears, New York Hero, Saratoga County, Unforgettable Max, Bocca Al Lupo, Houston’s Prayer and Private Horde.

One for the road: Indian Summer Girl is an improving daughter of Faygo who can win on the raise for owners Sarah and Nufri Fornaro and trainer Paul Maxwell in today’s 10th at Gulfstream Park. Luis Medina will ride Indian Summer Girl, who has won two in a row, in the $20,000 claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Kreeker, Yourway Highway and Summer Soliel in the second, Hasslefree in the third, and Manosteel and Spill The Ink in the fourth.
