It Was So Bad, They Had to Cancel It Twice

Despite the valiant efforts of hockey heavyweights Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, apparently there’s room for only one “Miracle on Ice” wish per eon, which was used up in Lake Placid in 1980.

Now that the NHL has become the No Hockey League, maybe next year they will play with replacement players. The question is, will they have replacement ticket prices? Probably not.

Commissioner Bettman got what he wanted, a lost season. He has been telling us for years that this could happen and it seems to be his master plan to make hockey irrelevant. The players at least tried to negotiate, something Bettman never did. The players pretty much gave up the farm, but Bettman barely moved off of his original offer.

Isn’t the commissioner supposed to do what is in the best interest of his sport? While there is plenty of blame to go around for this catastrophe, Bettman should bear most of the responsibility for bringing hockey to its knees.

When or if the NHL ever comes back, the league needs to sell the sport a lot better than the past 10 years. No more glow pucks and third jerseys. The sport needs drastic changes, starting with offense. Take away all the clutching and grabbing, make the rinks wider and take away the red line.

But the most important thing the league must do is sell the players. Look at the NBA, the NFL and Major League Baseball.

This game, this league, has so much potential. The Gretzky-Lemieux era is gone. The game has changed, so the league must change. Come on, what other sport allows fighting?
