Rutgers Streaks Past No. 4 Texas

Rutgers used a 13-0 run to end the game Sunday and upset No. 4-ranked Texas, 51-47, ending the Longhorns’ 41-game home winning streak.

The 24th-ranked Scarlet Knights (8-2) overcame an 18-point deficit and held Texas (7-3) scoreless in the last 8 1/2 minutes.

Freshman Matee Ajavon scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half for Rutgers.

It marked the second consecutive victory over a fellow member of the 700-win club for Coach C. Vivian Stringer, who beat Tennessee and Coach Pat Summitt on Wednesday.

No. 1 Louisiana State 79, Tulane 45 -- Seimone Augustus scored 23 points for the Tigers (13-0), who held the Green Wave (8-5) without a field goal for more than eight minutes in the first half at Baton Rouge, La.

No. 5 Stanford 72, Washington State 39 -- Brooke Smith’s 19 points sparked the host Cardinal (10-2, 2-1), which is 39-0 all-time against the Cougars (4-8, 0-3), to the Pacific 10 Conference win.

No. 6 Notre Dame 54, Seton Hall 33 -- Jacqueline Batteast had 18 points at South Bend, Ind., and the Irish (12-1, 1-0) routed the Pirates (8-4, 0-1) in a Big East Conference opener.

No. 8 Tennessee 68, Old Dominion 58 -- Shyra Ely scored 20 points at Norfolk, Va., where the Lady Vols (9-3) ended a 21-game home winning streak by the Monarchs (4-5).

No. 9 Ohio State 63, No. 20 Purdue 50 -- Jessica Davenport had 24 points and the Buckeyes (12-2, 1-1) extended their home winning streak to eight with the help of 24 turnovers by the Boilermakers (8-4, 1-1) in a Big Ten Conference game.

No. 10 Michigan State 70, Michigan 60 -- Junior Lindsay Bowen scored 16 points at Ann Arbor, Mich., and the Spartans (12-1, 1-0) matched their best start in 31 years with the win against the Wolverines (4-9, 0-2) in a Big Ten game.

No. 11 Connecticut 60, St. John’s 32 -- Mel Thomas had 12 points at New York and the Huskies (7-3, 1-0) cruised over the Red Storm (11-1, 0-1) in the Big East opener for both.

No. 12 Minnesota 61, Indiana 47 -- Janel McCarville had 22 points for the Gophers (11-2, 2-0), who held the Hoosiers (7-5, 0-2) scoreless for nearly six minutes in the second half of a Big Ten game at Minneapolis.

No. 13 Texas Tech 86, Idaho State 52 -- Chesley Dabbs’ 18 points lifted the Red Raiders (9-2), who used a 30-8 first-half run to put away the Bengals (4-8) at Lubbock, Texas.

No. 14 Boston College 69, West Virginia 56 -- Jessalyn Deveny scored 33 points at Morgantown, W.Va., to lead the Eagles (10-1, 1-0) over the Mountaineers (9-2, 0-1) in a Big East game.

No. 15 Vanderbilt 78, Troy 50 -- Ashley Earley scored 22 points, leading the Commodores (11-1) over the Trojans (2-7)to their 48th consecutive nonconference home victory.

Virginia Tech 77, No. 17 Maryland 67 -- Carrie Mason had 16 points in the Atlantic Coast Conference debut for the host Hokies (10-2), who withstood a 34-19 run by the Terrapins (10-2) in the second half.

No. 18 Iowa 72, Illinois 58 -- At Champaign, Ill., Jamie Cavey scored 19 points to lead the Hawkeyes (13-0, 2-0) over the Illini (9-3, 1-1).

No. 19 De Paul 92, Holy Cross 49 -- Khara Smith scored 19 points at Chicago to lead the Blue Demons (11-2) over the Crusaders (5-7).

No. 22 Kansas State 77, Central Connecticut State 23 -- Kendra Wecker had 24 points and 10 rebounds and the host Wildcats (9-2) ended with a 31-1 run to rout the Blue Devils (1-8).
