Welcome to Viewpoint Letters of Los Angeles

Arte Moreno, if you are looking for a larger fan base, you can take a line from the old Jack Benny radio program. Name your team the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga.

I am a longtime Orange County resident, and proud fan of the Angels, yet I believe the name change from Anaheim to Los Angeles makes sense -- business sense:

* Broadcasting contracts, not ticket sales, drive revenue.

* Revenue drives player contract levels.

* Player contract levels drive on-field success.

* On-field success drives attendance.

Angel fans, let’s get behind Arte Moreno, a successful media/baseball owner. After all, it’s his money!

How about the California Angels of Anaheim of Los Angeles of California of North America of Earth of the Universe. Then, what do I know? I’m a Dodger fan.

Hey “Arte Moreno of Arizona,” I’d rather you re-raised beer prices than be saddled with the absurd name of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the last experiment of a Los Angeles-named team playing in Anaheim: They now reside in Missouri due to all of those Los Angeles fans and sponsors “flocking” to the O.C. to support them.

Kudos to Arte Moreno for his tactics in renaming his baseball franchise. A most clever ploy to attract and recruit a broader fan base, more diverse advertising sponsors and increased broadcast revenue.

Let’s hear it for the L.(atin) A.(merican) Angels of Anaheim.

Why doesn’t Moreno just get it over with and rename his team “the Little Dodgers of Anaheim.” Apparently, a year in Orange County hasn’t taught Moreno that your average latte-loving, SUV-driving O.C. resident has about as much affection for Los Angeles as the Hatfields have for the McCoys.

Some advice to Moreno: Winning is what brings fans, not phony city names.

The owner of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim has confirmed something that we already knew from the owners of the New York Yankees of the Bronx and the Los Angeles Clippers of Los Angeles: You don’t have to be smart to be rich.
