Texas Assistant Is Choice of Syracuse

After 30 years as an assistant coach in the college and pro ranks, Greg Robinson realized his career goal of becoming a head coach by accepting the job at Syracuse.

A year to the day after resigning as the defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs and after a short, successful stint at Texas, Robinson was introduced Tuesday as the coach of the Orange.

Robinson, 53, spent 15 seasons in the college ranks before jumping to the NFL for 14 seasons.

Robinson succeeds Paul Pasqualoni, who was fired Dec. 29.

Auburn defensive coordinator Gene Chizik won the Broyles Award as college football’s top assistant coach.... Georgia defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, 45, who won the Broyles Award last year, has accepted an offer to become linebacker coach for Jacksonville of the NFL.... A judge has refused to dismiss a suit filed by former Washington Coach Rick Neuheisel against the university and said he would rule Friday on a similar dismissal motion by the NCAA.

Temple quarterback Walter Washington, who led Division I-A quarterbacks with 15 rushing touchdowns, will forgo his final year of eligibility and make himself available for the NFL draft.... Temple, which will compete as an independent in 2005, is attempting to become a member of the Mid-American Conference for 2006.... Auburn Coach Tommy Tuberville, who says his 13-0 Tigers were kept out of the bowl championship series title game in part because their preseason ranking was No. 17, plans to recommend to the American Football Coaches Assn., that the first coaches poll not be released until the middle of the season.
