Two gunmen shot to death a commander of the Baja California state police outside his home in Tijuana as he left for work Wednesday morning, Mexican authorities said.

Jose de Jesus Bedolla Garibaldi, 49, who had been chief of the Tijuana office since April, was pronounced dead at the scene after the gunmen sprayed his car with more than 50 bullets, officials said.

The killers fled in a red Ford Ranger with a California license plate. Authorities said one person was being questioned about the crime.

Garibaldi was a former detective who spent 20 years in the state police. His death follows the gangland-style assassination last year of his counterpart in Mexicali. In September, two state police officers were also fatally shot in Tijuana.
