Miss Loren Takes Drop

Share

Miss Loren, who has competed only in graded stakes since coming to the United States from Argentina, will drop in class to face Valentine Dancer and four others in the $75,000 Paseana Handicap today at Santa Anita. The race is the first leg of a pick six with a carry-over of $78,153.

Trained by Luis Seglin for Liers Corporation, the 7-year-old Numerous mare hit the board in five of nine starts in 2004, including a shocking 34-1 upset in the Clement L. Hirsch Handicap, a Grade II, on Aug. 8.

Second to Island Fashion in the Lady’s Secret Breeders’ Cup Handicap in her lone start over the Santa Anita main track Oct. 3, Miss Loren is the 8-5 favorite in the Paseana, which will be run at 1 1/16 miles. Jose Valdivia Jr. will ride the Argentine-bred, who has won 11 of 43 races in her career.

Conveyor’s Angel, who has won two of three on the grass, is the 8-5 favorite in the day’s other minor stakes, the $75,000 Blue Norther at a mile.

Owned by Charles Cono and trained by Chris Paasch, Conveyor’s Angel, a 3-year-old daughter of Conveyor, will be making her first start since she finished second, beaten by a neck, behind Paddy’s Daisy in the second division of the Miesque Stakes on Nov. 26 at Hollywood Park. Kent Desormeaux will be aboard for the first time.

Race of the day: Que Puntal, who won gamely in her U.S. debut Dec. 13 at Calder, will try for a repeat for owner Earle Mack and trainer Angel Penna Jr. in today’s ninth at Gulfstream Park. Eddie Castro will again ride the 5-year-old Contested Bid mare in the $37,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

One for the road: My Cousin Andy should be able to clear his rivals in today’s eighth race at Golden Gate Fields and should hold on better with a race under his belt in the $25,000 maiden claimer at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A place pick all using Chiltepin in the first, Stormin Away and Scipion in the second, Miss Loren in the third, Cryptovinsky and Casual Thunder in the fourth, Mysterious Cat and Standing Tall in the fifth, Peg O My Heart in the sixth, Conveyor’s Angel in the seventh and Grayson Lear, Fantastic Wager and Kay Max in the eighth.
