Swag that is designed for a separate breed

Swag -- does it make dogs wag?

The Golden Globes will not be the only prestigious awards handed out Sunday, as best in show will be awarded the nation’s top dog at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship dog show in Tampa, Fla. And shiny trophies and shiny hair are not the only things the two events have in common. The ubiquitous swag bag has entered the world of the canine, with a $1,000 goody bag going to the winning dog in each of 25 categories. Celebrity presenters at the Golden Globes receive goody bags valued at more than $36,000 each.

However, unlike their human companions, who may break out in fisticuffs over a goody bag consisting of a can of Red Bull, a diet candy bar and pina colada lip gloss, dogs don’t get excited over the notion of freebies. And they don’t know from designer labels. They’ll throw them up too.

There is some overlap in the people/doggie bags: Both the Golden Globes and dog show gift bags contain dog carriers, fancy bowls, rings one might chew and spa products (the dogs’, surely, are packed with mud).
