Volume at Twin Ports Breaks Record

Share

A record 13.1 million shipping containers passed through Southern California’s twin harbors in 2004, up 11% from the previous peak of 11.9 million in 2003 at the nation’s busiest seaport complex.

The surge was fueled almost entirely by a 24% increase in traffic at Long Beach’s port, which handled 5.78 million containers, up from 4.66 million in 2003.

The Port of Los Angeles remained the nation’s busiest single harbor. But the growth was relatively minor, up nearly 2% to 7.32 million containers from 7.18 million in 2003.
