Sal Pacino, 82; Former Covina Restaurateur and Father of Actor

Sal Pacino, 82, former restaurateur and father of actor Al Pacino, died Wednesday in Covina of a heart attack.

Born Salvatore Alfred Pacino in Manhattan, he began working as a shoeshine boy. According to his website, he dropped out of high school at 15, married at 17 and a year later became a father to Alfred “Al” Pacino. After serving in the Army during World War II, he sold insurance for Metropolitan Life, a career that lasted 30 years and brought him to Los Angeles in 1956.

Pacino became active in community theater as an actor and director. For many years, he owned and operated Pacino’s Lounge, a restaurant and bar in Covina. He closed the establishment in 1991 and retired.

With his fifth wife, Katherin Kovin, Pacino became a member of the Screen Actors Guild and worked as an extra. Among his projects was the “Silver Foxes” workout video series with Stefanie Powers.
