Stars aren’t enough for NBC
NBC didn’t set the ratings ablaze with two star-studded specials this past weekend.
The network’s broadcast of “Tsunami Aid: A Concert of Hope” averaged 5.7 million viewers Saturday, though NBC said that more than 19.6 million people sampled some of it either there or on other channels, including Bravo, USA, Trio, the Sci-Fi Network, CNBC, MSNBC, PAX and Telemundo. By comparison, Fox’s telecast of the NFC Division Playoffs at that time averaged 21.5 million viewers.
On Sunday, the Peacock network’s three-hour telecast of the 62nd annual Golden Globes was no match for the ABC juggernaut of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and “Desperate Housewives.” From 8 to 9 p.m., “Extreme Makeover” averaged 20.4 million viewers, with the Globes in second with 16.3 million. From 9 to 10 p.m., “Desperate Housewives” averaged 24 million viewers and the Globes dropped to third place with 15 million. The awards rebounded into first place from 10 to 11 p.m. with an average of 18.9 million viewers.
