Hot Shooting Carries Irvine Over Davis
Aaron Fitzgerald scored 14 points on six-for-seven shooting for UC Irvine, which made five of six free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure a 71-64 victory at UC Davis.
The Anteaters (9-6) won their third in a row with the help of a 13-4 second-half run after Greg Ethington’s jumper tied the score, 55-55, with five minutes left.
Ross Schraeder had 13 points and Jeff Gloger had 10 for Irvine, which shot 62.5% from the field, a season high.
Davis scored the first 10 points of the game, but Irvine came back with a 22-6 run over the next nine minutes.
The Aggies (8-10) led, 29-28, at halftime, thanks to a three-pointer by Fowzi Abdelsamad with a minute left in the first half. Abdelsamad had six three-pointers for Davis, which made 10 of its 23 attempts. Abdelsamad scored 22 points.
