Magna 5 Returns, Goes to Winner of the Hour

The Magna 5, a minimum $2 wager that requires bettors to pick five winners in less than an hour at four different tracks, returns today.

The races in the sequence are the $75,000 Nelli Morse from Laurel, the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf from Gulfstream Park, the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff from Santa Anita, a $26,500 maiden sprint from Golden Gate Fields and the $1-million Sunshine Millions Classic from Gulfstream.

A one-mile race for older fillies and mares, the Nelli Morse is headed by graded stakes winner Roar Emotion and the sharp Maryland-bred filly Silmaril, the 4-year-old daughter of Diamond. Owned by breeders Christopher Feifarek and Stephen Quick and trained by Chris Grove, Silmaril has won six of nine overall and five of her last six. She will be ridden by Ryan Fogelsonger.

Moscow Burning will be favored in the Filly and Mare Turf, Yearly Report is the one to beat in the Distaff, Hollywood Park shipper Keystone Malibu and first-time starters Reagle Mary and Wild Toy head the field in the maiden race, and Midas Eyes is the almost certain choice in the Classic. The 5-year-old Touch Gold horse won his only previous start at Gulfstream by 9 1/4 lengths in the Swale last March 15.

Race of the day: Uncle Camie, who has won three of four starts on Aqueduct’s inner track, is among nine hard-knocking sprinters who will get together in today’s $75,000 Paumonok Handicap at six furlongs. Richard Migliore will ride Uncle Camie, a 5-year-old Abaginone horse, who has won six of 16 for trainer Michael Hushion. Other contenders include Don Six, Korbyn Gold, Papua and Mr. Whitestone.

One for the road: Love For Ali, a winner of seven of 21, can make a successful debut in today’s fourth at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. The 5-year-old Not For Love mare will be making her first start for hot trainer Gamaliel Vasquez in the $32,000 optional claimer at six furlongs. Carlos Marquez Jr. will ride for owner Michael Gill.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Gospodin and San Remy in the first, Savonarola, Coded Message and Astonished in the second and Running Bobcats, Brooke’s Halo and Memorette in the third.
