Edwards, Repko Enjoy the Sun

A day after their shining moments, rookies Mike Edwards and Jason Repko wore big smiles in the clubhouse, although in Repko’s case he had to grin through pain.

Edwards is batting .307, but he didn’t hit his first home run until his 96th at-bat, a drought that had folks in his hometown of Mechanicsburg, Pa., calling and gently asking when he would show some pop.

Batting coach Tim Wallach addressed the topic differently, kidding Edwards during batting practice Friday about the power outage. The best Edwards could do was hit one off the wall, and he tossed his bat in mock disgust.

But in the fifth inning he drove the first pitch from Diamondback right-hander Javier Vazquez into the Dodger bullpen, where reliever Kelly Wunsch retrieved it and made sure Edwards was given the ball.

“I didn’t want to dwell on it or change my swing,” Edwards said. “But I was starting to wonder. I got it up in the air, that was the key.”

Repko got in the air too, leaping for a fly ball in the sixth inning and crashing into the scoreboard in right field before falling onto his back with the ball in his glove.

Center fielder J.D. Drew rushed over to make sure he was OK, asking him where he was. Repko gave the right answer: “Dodger Stadium.”

Manager Jim Tracy went out to check on Repko, and Drew jokingly told Tracy that Repko said he was in Yankee Stadium. On Saturday, Repko had to laugh through gritted teeth.

“I’m sore in five or six places,” he said.

Nagging injuries kept Cesar Izturis and Olmedo Saenz out of the starting lineup for the second day in a row.

Izturis, mired in a month-long slump, will not play tonight because of a tight right hamstring, but Tracy said he probably would return Monday.

Saenz said he is bothered by lower back pain, not the hip injury that kept him from running full speed on a fly ball against the Angels a week ago. He pinch-hit Saturday and said he could play tonight.

Outfielder Ricky Ledee wants to be activated from the disabled list in time for the Dodger trip to Colorado on Monday, but the determination will be made by team trainers.

Ledee, who is batting .279, has been sidelined since June 5 because of a strained hamstring. He has been swinging in the batting cage for weeks and is running at about 75% after getting a cortisone injection recently.

Ledee, the team’s primary left-handed pinch-hitter, would prefer not to have a minor league rehabilitation assignment.

“With the stuff I do, I don’t think I need that,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of time in the cage.”

A baseball clinic for women will take place today from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Dodger Stadium and is open to the public. Second baseman Jeff Kent, pitcher Odalis Perez, coach Manny Mota and former Dodger outfielder Lou Johnson will serve as instructors.... Closer Eric Gagne (elbow) and reserve catcher Paul Bako (knee) will have examinations Tuesday and begin rehabilitation. Both players are out for the season.
