Support for Reviving the San Joaquin River

Share

The Times is to be praised for its June 28 editorial “A Parched River,” supporting restoration of flows in the San Joaquin River as good for all Californians. I am a director of Revive the San Joaquin, a new Fresno-based nonprofit organization dedicated to restoration of fishery flows on the river and protection of farming on the east side of the southern San Joaquin Valley.

The Times is correct that “reviving a dead river” will result in cleaner delta drinking supplies for 22 million Californians. Seventy miles of riverbed on the valley floor are now dry in all but flood years. Much of a restored river’s flow can be recaptured at the delta and sent south in the state aqueduct to farmers in the south valley and Southern Californians. A win-win solution is possible.
