Man Held in Death of Girlfriend’s Mother
A 72-year-old woman was bludgeoned and stabbed to death in her home Monday, allegedly by a man who may have been under the influence of drugs, police said.
Eddie McClendon, 53, was arrested in connection with the killing of Mary Gurley. McClendon, who lives nearby, was dating the woman’s adult daughter, said Officer Israel Ramirez, a Police Department spokesman.
Police said McClendon forced his way into the Gurley house in the 2200 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard shortly after 8 a.m. and attacked Gurley. McClendon also grabbed his girlfriend’s 6-year-old daughter, took her outside and threw her into an alley, police said.
Family members called relatives and police for help. A grandson detained McClendon until police arrived.
