Some Optimism About Cabrera

A CT scan of Orlando Cabrera’s right elbow Tuesday showed small debris in the joint of the elbow and continued inflammation, a condition that could require surgery after the season but one the shortstop will try to play through this season.

Cabrera, who was put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, resumed his throwing program this week, and the Angels hope he will be able to return shortly after the All-Star break.

“It’s just an indication of wear and tear, and we’re hoping it won’t impact him getting back in the short term,” Manager Mike Scioscia said of the latest test results. “Eventually, they may have to go in and flush some stuff out, but we’re very optimistic he’ll be back after the break.”

If General Manager Bill Stoneman were motivated to make a deal before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline -- and he has shown little inclination thus far -- he would have no shortage of bargaining chips.

The Angels were rated No. 1 in Baseball America’s organizational talent rankings entering 2005 and have a glut of highly regarded middle-infield prospects, including double-A second baseman Alberto Callaspo (.290, seven homers, 45 runs batted in) and shortstop Erick Aybar (.281, five homers, 45 RBIs), and Class-A second baseman Brandon Wood (.304, 28 homers, 71 RBIs) and shortstop Howie Kendrick (.375, 10 homers, 40 RBIs).

“Bill doesn’t like the rent-a-player,” Scioscia said. “If he’s going to give up young talent he’ll look for something that helps us now and in the future at the big league level.”

Bengie Molina’s left wrist, struck by foul balls twice Tuesday night, was “a little sore” Wednesday but not enough to keep him out of the lineup. Molina started at designated hitter and had two hits, including a tying, two-run single in the fifth inning.

“I actually thought it was going to be a lot worse than it is,” Molina said. “I think my wristband and tape absorbed some of the impact. I didn’t take any [pain] pills, which is a good sign. Usually, I have to take a whole bottle.”
