Getty lands ‘Grand Canal’
The J. Paul Getty Museum snagged the top item in an auction of Old Master pictures Friday, paying $7.6 million for “The Grand Canal, Venice, With the Palazzo Bembo” by Francesco Guardi.
The 18th century Italian painting was consigned to Christie’s in London by heirs of German collectors John and Anna Jaffe, whose artworks were confiscated by the Nazis in 1943 and recently returned to the family.
The 18- by 30-inch, oil-on-canvas work depicts the Grand Canal by morning light in the artist’s trademark atmospheric style. At the Getty, it will join four drawings by Guardi, including two other views of Venice.
