From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Legislature approved a deal Wednesday between Democratic lawmakers and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to replace the eastern span of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge, which was damaged in a 1989 earthquake.

AB 144, by Assemblywoman Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley), plugs a $3.6-billion cost overrun with a $1 increase in Bay Area bridge tolls, starting in 2007, and a refinancing of existing tolls. The state will add $300 million to tear down the old span. The bill passed the Assembly 58 to 6.
