NHL Fans Aren’t Sold on This Deal

I haven’t seen or heard where the NHL owners are offering the fans a 24% rollback in ticket prices.

With the apparent NHL agreement, the comment by Chris McGowan, Kings’ VP of sales and marketing [July 6], shows part of the arrogance that caused the stoppage. He said it was a matter of “pushing a button and setting things in motion” and he expected it was just “a matter of time” before the Kings got back to sellouts.

That attitude toward the fans is way off the mark. The Kings and all the clubs should be making no assumptions and operating as if they’ll be playing before a lot of empty seats.

Amid all of the talk of rule changes to rejuvenate the NHL, no one is talking about the elephant in the room: the tolerance of fighting. The misguided notion that fighting is somehow intrinsic to hockey has destroyed the league’s credibility with the general sporting public, and the best thing the league could do to show it has confidence in its new on-ice “product” is to impose stiff penalties for fighting, as is done in the other major team sports.
