Struggling Padres Lose Sixth Straight

Rookie right-hander Robinson Tejeda gave up two singles in six innings and Chase Utley homered for the second consecutive game as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres, 2-0, Saturday at Philadelphia.

The slumping Padres, who suffered their sixth consecutive loss, were shut out for the fourth time in 11 games. Utley connected off starter Pedro Astacio (0-1) for a 404-foot drive to right-center to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Utley also helped the Phillies score in the sixth. He beat out an infield hit when Astacio, who was covering first, couldn’t find the bag. Utley took third on Bobby Abreu’s single, and he scored on Ryan Howard’s sacrifice fly.

Washington 4, Houston 2 -- The Nationals capitalized on Willy Taveras’ misplay of Carlos Baerga’s bases-loaded fly to center in the first inning at Washington. Taveras came in, then retreated as it sailed over his head. The three-run double gave the Nationals all the runs they needed to end a three-game skid and win for the fifth time in 17 games.

Atlanta 3, Arizona 2 -- Andruw Jones led off the ninth inning with his 30th home run to give the Braves the win at Phoenix. Jones’ shot to left on an 0-2 pitch from Jose Valverde (1-4) kept the Braves tied with Washington atop the East Division.

Florida 16, San Francisco 4 -- Carlos Delgado and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back homers during a five-run fifth at San Francisco, and Josh Beckett won in his return from the disabled list. Beckett (9-6) pitched six innings, facing the minimum in all but the second. He gave up four hits and didn’t walk a batter.

Chicago 6, St. Louis 5 -- Derrek Lee hit his major league-leading 32nd homer, and Jeromy Burnitz and Aramis Ramirez also hit home runs to help the Cubs end a three-game losing streak. The Cubs won for only the 10th time in 43 games at Busch Stadium over the last six seasons.

Milwaukee 11, Cincinnati 7 -- Lyle Overbay hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in a career-high six runs to lead the Brewers at Cincinnati. Milwaukee’s Carlos Lee homered and drove in three runs to take over the league lead with 82 RBIs, one more than Derrek Lee.

Pittsburgh 5, Colorado 3 -- Dave Williams limited the Rockies to one hit over six innings, and rookies Ryan Doumit and Brad Eldred drove in all but one of the Pirate runs at Pittsburgh. Williams (8-7) had been 2-5 with a 6.91 earned-run average in PNC Park.
