Pollution Problems Plague City’s Wells
The city is losing a lot of its wells to pollution, worsening chronic supply and pressure problems, officials said.
At last count, in June, about 12 of the city’s 96 wells were shut down because of low-level uranium contamination from rocks near the city’s aquifer.
Seven other wells were contaminated with other substances, including nitrates, a banned pesticide and a dry-cleaning chemical.
Officials said that public health is not being threatened and that they are evaluating the options and the cost of restoring the wells.
