Michael Jackson was taken to an emergency room Sunday for treatment of a back problem that has plagued him throughout his child-molestation trial, a spokeswoman said.

Jackson, accompanied by a bodyguard, arrived at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital about 2:30 p.m., said spokeswoman Raymone Bain.

“It’s pretty serious,” Bain said at an impromptu news conference outside the hospital. “It was serious enough for him to come over here.”

After seeking hospital treatment for back pain in March the same day his accuser testified, Jackson, wearing pajama bottoms, arrived late to court. The judge had ordered him to appear or face arrest.

The jury received Jackson’s case Friday and deliberated for about two hours before adjourning. It was to resume discussions today. Bain said that after being treated, Jackson planned to return to his Neverland ranch to await the verdict.
