Securities and Exchange Commission member Cynthia A. Glassman said Friday that the agency should “step back” and review all the rules that govern the securities industry.

“That’s one of the things I wanted to do when I came in the first place, 3 1/2 years ago,” Glassman told Bloomberg Television. “It’s important that we look at all of the rules in place and make sure they’re accomplishing their objectives and doing it in the most effective way.”

The SEC will come under new leadership when Chairman William H. Donaldson resigns June 30. Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) has been nominated by President Bush as the next agency chief.

Glassman and her Republican colleague, Paul S. Atkins, have voted against Donaldson, a fellow Republican, and the Democratic commissioners. If Cox is confirmed, she said, the commissioners “will find out for ourselves directly” where he stands on issues.
