Lillian Lux, 86; Yiddish Theater Actress Also Did One-Woman Shows

Lillian Lux, 86, a leading actress and singer in the Yiddish theater, died Sunday at a hospital in New York City. A cause of death was not announced.

Lux and her husband, Pesach Burstein, a comedian and singer, appeared in dozens of musicals, comedies and melodramas in the 1930s and ‘40s.

According to a New York Times obituary Thursday, she was best known for her role as Feygele in the operetta “A Khasene in Shtetl” (A Village Wedding).

A documentary about the family, “The Komediant,” was shown in the United States in 2002. It details the family’s life after the decline of the Yiddish theater. Lux provided the narration in the film.

Lux was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and began as an actress with the Yiddish Art Theatre at age 6. She was 16 when she met Burstein and joined his troupe on an international tour. They were married in Uruguay in 1938 and worked together until his death in 1986. After he died, she appeared in one-woman shows and on the radio, the Times obituary said.
