No Trace of Missing Cub Scout

Searchers had few clues Monday to the whereabouts of an 11-year-old boy missing from a popular Boy Scout camp in a snowcapped mountain range.

Brennan Hawkins was last seen Friday afternoon at the camp in the Uinta Mountains east of Salt Lake City.

“We have nothing to go on,” Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds said.

Brennan, a Cub Scout, was a visitor at the camp with a friend, whose father was volunteering at a three-day session for 1,400 older scouts.

The sheriff said he had no reason to suspect foul play but had opened a criminal investigation, and detectives were checking the background of every adult who was at the camp Friday.

Although 1,000 volunteers searched Saturday and 3,000 turned out Sunday, the pool of volunteers dwindled to 600 on Monday. There also were 75 professional searchers.

Through the day Monday, a nine-member swift-water rescue team scoured about 1 1/2 miles of the east fork of the Bear River. They found three socks and a sandal, but none were connected to the boy, Edmunds said.
