It’s Pure, Sweet Devotion

Ned Welsh’s story about his wife Diane’s quest for her doughnut dream has to be the perfect depiction of true love (“Diane’s Doughnut Moon,” Feb. 13). I was moved by Welsh’s unfailing support of his wife’s dream in the face of ridiculous odds, long periods of separation and a broken fryer. I couldn’t help but feel that this is what real romance is. It is the thing that sustains a relationship through the challenges, heartaches and disappointments that life throws in its way: loving self-sacrifice. Welsh put his wife and her dream first. In return he got the perfect fritter--and the miracle of a deep and abiding love.

Diane’s radiant countenance is not from a sugar high or the heat from the fryer or ovens. That glow is unbridled delirium as a result of pursuing her passion with her husband’s blessing.

The story brought tears to my eyes. The power of doughnut shops! They are churches for us wayward folks who believe in the power of doughnut holes and yeastful camaraderie.
