London? No, it’s San Marino

Reading Paula L. Woods’ delightful article [“Deadly Homes and Gardens,” March 3] reminded me of when I was writing my first biographical novel. Four chapters were set in 18th century London, and I needed to re-create a Georgian mansion but couldn’t afford a trip there to see one.
Problem solved when our family visited the Huntington Library. One look and I knew that was it. I even made several trips up and down the curving staircase so I could capture my heroine’s feelings when she descended it to find the Earl of Dartmouth waiting to be introduced.
