Broken Arrow

As a longtime fan of radio station Arrow 93, I was shocked to hear the abrupt and drastic change to the new “Jack” format, without on-air hosts [“They Want to Make You Say ‘Oh Wow,’ ” by Steve Carney, March 19]. I’m sure it’s cheaper to run a computer-driven radio station, but real radio is more than just playing music. It’s about connecting with the audience through knowledgeable and passionate radio personalities who love the music as much as we do. If I only wanted to listen to music, I’d play my iPod.

Jack’s new format, where they jump from songs I like to songs I’ve never heard before, could be far less painful if Mary Price or Joe Benson were there to ease me into those new tunes.

The arrival of Jack FM makes me miss more than ever its distant predecessor at 93.1: mellow-rock KNX-FM. While Jack FM takes great pride in programming song segues that are random and jarring, KNX-FM was distinguished for its expertly crafted music sets assembled not just thematically but by tempo and key. To this day, KNX-FM remains without peer.

Jack FM may arrogantly boast, “We play what we want,” but I listen to what I want -- and I don’t want to know Jack.
