Proposal to Re-Regulate Power Gets Support

Share

A proposed ballot initiative to re-regulate California’s electricity market has won the support of an umbrella group of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s foes.

The Alliance for a Better California, which includes groups representing the elderly and consumers as well as unions for teachers, firefighters and nurses, vowed to spend “whatever it takes” to get the measure on the ballot.

Initiative backers blame energy deregulation for triggering rolling blackouts and surging energy prices in 2000 and 2001.

Initiative foes say it would prohibit customers from choosing their own electricity providers, which they say helps lower prices.
