The Orange County district attorney’s office turned over $2 million to the county Tuesday, after obtaining a settlement from three oil companies that had been fined for polluting, officials said.

The funds came from Shell Oil, Thrifty Oil and Atlantic Richfield companies, officials said.

The companies were forced to clean up contamination at 370 gas station sites in Orange County after an investigation revealed numerous violations, including leaking gas that contaminated soil and groundwater.
